Artists' Biographies:
An alumnus of UNT, Jeff Elrod was born in 1966 and currently lives and works in Marfa, Texas. He has had solo exhibitions at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth; Leo Koenig, Inc., New York; and Fredericks & Freiser Gallery, New York. He has been a resident artist at the Glassel School of Art, Houston; the Rijksakademie Van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam; and The Chinati Foundation, Marfa. His work is represented in many prominent collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis.

Elrod’s paintings are rendered by hand and informed by digital media. Steeped in the tradition of hard-edged American abstraction, Elrod has been using the computer as a drawing tool since the mid nineties. After making a drawing in a simple, vector-based graphics program, he transfers it to canvas by projecting the image, tracing the forms, masking out sections with tape, and applying layers of paint by hand. His finished works play with notions of “digital originals” and “handmade copies,” reflecting the interplay between canvas and brush, computer and mouse.

David Jones is master printer, founder and executive director of Anchor Graphics (1988 – present). He established Anchor Graphics in order to advance the fine art printmaking tradition by providing educational and art-making opportunities for people of all ages and experience levels. By forming partnerships with educational institutions and social organizations in the Chicago area, Jones built a multi-faceted print shop that hosts classes, workshops, open studio sessions, internships, residencies, exhibitions, contract printing and collaborations with professional artists. In 2006, Anchor Graphics merged with Columbia College Chicago to expand its programming.

As a master printer, David specializes in multi-color lithography and is proficient in intaglio, monotype, screenprinting and relief methods. He has worked with significant artists from the Chicago area, including Michiko Itatani, Hollis Sigler and Karl Wirsum. He has also collaborated with numerous nationally renowned artists, including MacArthur Binion, Dale Chihuly, Sue Coe and Laurie Hogin. In his own creative work, he integrates digital imaging with hand-pulled printmaking techniques and drawing. David’s advocacy of printmaking extends to national-level professional organizations and print shops, and he serves on the advisory boards of Southern Graphics Council International and Highpoint Center for Printmaking (Minneapolis, Minnesota).

Etching Workshop | Feb. 12 – 13 | Carter Scaggs

The Vision by Carter Scaggs
Etching with Carter Scaggs
Saturday, February 12 at 9:30 am - Sunday, February 13 at 5:00pm

Workshop Description:
We will explore relatively new breakthroughs and technological advancements in the art of etching. Traditional techniques such as aquatint, soft ground, hard ground, mock mezzotint, and lift ground have been updated and enhanced via the use of water-based, acrylic resist methodologies. In short, the visual power of these etching techniques has been retained, but the toxic, chemical hazards have been completely removed. Each participant will have the opportunity to produce beautiful etchings using these contemporary methods.

Biography:
Carter Scaggs is current Art Department Chair at Collin County Community College and has been teaching at Collin College since 1993. He teaches Design I, Life Drawing I & II, Life Drawing Portfolio, Printmaking I & II, and Printmaking Portfolio.

The intaglio and linocut printmaking processes and drawing are Professor Scaggs' preferred media, and he has shown his work in galleries and competitions nationally. Mr. Scaggs received his B.F.A in Printmaking from the University of North Texas and his M.F.A. in Printmaking from Indiana University.

As a second-generation artist/teacher, Mr. Scaggs has been involved in art education from an early age. His philosophy of teaching is based on what he remembers of his best teachers. They shared their knowledge, loved their craft and sought to help each student be successful.

Workshop limited to 10 participants. $100 for current UNT students, $125 for UNT Alumni & UNT Faculty/Staff, $125 for Sr. Citizens, $150 for Artists.
