Introducing our crew

Meet this semester's team (L – R): Emily Moyer, Thomas Menikos, and Lari Gibbons.

Emily Moyer is this semester's graduate assistant at PRINT and a first year printmaking MFA candidate from Denver, Colorado. She has previously taught children’s workshops at the Art Students League of Denver, participated in printmaking workshops at the Tamarind Institute and Frogman’s Print Workshops, and has contributed to her printmaking community by organizing group print exhibitions and co-chairing Month of Printmaking in Denver. We are thrilled to welcome Emily Moyer to our north Texas community!

P.R.I.N.T's Fall 2017 hours

Welcome to the fall semester!

P.R.I.N.T is open:

  Mondays from 8 – 11 a.m. and 3 – 5 p.m.

  Tuesdays from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

  Wednesdays from 8 – 11 a.m.

We are available by appointment. Please contact us via email.

Admission is free. Metered parking is available on Oak and Fry Street. Free parking is available on public streets in adjacent neighborhoods. You can also check UNT Visitor Parking Services.

P.R.I.N.T is closed for all university holidays and closures. These include Monday, September 4 for Labor Day and November 23 to 26 for Thanksgiving. We close December 7, 2017 for winter break.

Visitors pulled relief and screen prints inspired by Dell's work

Thank you to Jeffrey Dell who collaborated at P.R.I.N.T Press to produce an limited edition of fine art prints entitled Transit using laser-cut woodblocks and screenprint on Yupo paper.

Our Open House release party featured a demo and allowed visitors to make their own relief or screenprint inspired by the artist. We also provided free take-aways such as buttons and stickers. Check out photos of these events on our Facebook page!

Work by Director Lari Gibbons was included in an exchange portfolio curated by Nicole Hand for the 2016 Mid America Print Council conference at Indiana University Southeast. Entitled Visual Elegy, the project asked participants to create an original print in response to bell hooks’ recent book, Appalachian Elegy. bell hooks is an acclaimed social activist, feminist theorist, artist, and native Kentuckian.

Visual Elegy has also been shown at Murray Art Guild (Murray, KY) and the Yeiser Art Center (Paducah, Kentucky).

Dir. Gibbons at Denton Mini Maker Faire

Director Lari Gibbons recently showed letterpress printing from wood type made on a computer-numerically controlled (CNC) router at the Denton Mini Maker Faire in Denton, Texas.

The project was made possible in part by a Microgrant from the Greater Denton Arts Council and a Team Mentor Grant from the University of North Texas. Thank you to UTA's Wild Pony Editions for loaning the press while ours is being restored!

Welcome Sam, David and Thomas!

Students, staff and volunteers play important roles at P.R.I.N.T, assisting every aspect of our operation. This semester we're excited to welcome three new people to the press (L – R):

Sam Cowan is a P.R.I.N.T Intern and our first 2016–17 Undergraduate Research Fellowship recipient. For his Fellowship, Sam will work in the research-guided environment at P.R.I.N.T and will present a poster or paper on UNT Scholars Day in April 2017. He is working towards a BFA in Printmaking in UNT's College of Visual Arts and Design.

David Villegas is an MFA candidate in Printmaking at UNT. David received a BFA in Printmaking with a minor in Computer Art from from West Texas A&M University and a BS in Biology. He has assisted several previous collaborations and we're pleased he has joined us for his Graduate Assistantship! 

Thomas Menikos is the new UNT Printmaking Technician. Thomas received his Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art in 2016 from the University of Dallas and a BFA from the University of North Texas. His hard work and positive contributions are already making a big difference at UNT Printmaking and at P.R.I.N.T!

What STEM Learns from Us panel, SGCI conference, Portland, OR

P.R.I.N.T Director Lari Gibbons recently spoke on a panel, What STEM Learns from Us, chaired by Nancy Palmeri for the Southern Graphics Council International FLUX conference in Portland, Oregon. Participants in the panel include Nicole Hand, Kate Bingaman-Burt, myself, Syd Webb, Hannah March Sanders, Charles Beneke, David Diaz, Scott Cook, Benjamin Rinehart, Hannah March Sanders, Adrienne Cook, and Breanne Trammell.

Work by Lari Gibbons for Wonderous Transformations

In conjunction with the conference, by Lari Gibbons was also selected by Brian Shannon and Kathy Kuehn for the 24 From 24 exhibition at the Oregon College of Art and Craft in Portland and an exchange portfolio curated by Emily Arthur and Ruthann Godollei entitled Wondrous Transformation and Peculiar Nourishment: Celebrating the Engravings of Maria Sibylla Merian. 

Nathan Eclavea 2015 CVAD T-Shirt Design Winner!

Congratulations to Nathan Eclavea, one of the top three top 3 entries from 2015 College of Visual Arts and Design T-Shirt Design Competition entries. Nathan is an Intern at P.R.I.N.T and a BFA candidate in Printmaking.

The winning designs are:
1st place ($300) - Eric Cuellar "CVAD"
2nd place ($200) - Blithe Parsons "I do more than make pretty things."
3rd place ($100) - Nathan Eclavea "Eagle Skull and Cross Bones"

Congratulations to Eric, Blithe and Nathan! These 2015 winning designs, along with last year's winning designs, will be printed on t-shirts which will be available for purchase from Pan Ector Industries, a Denton screen printing & design shop. Pan Ector will be on-site at the 2015 CVAD Preview Day printing the t-shirts, where they will also be available for purchase.

Thank you to Visiting Artist Sedrick Huckaby and Master Printer Brian Garner, who collaborated at P.R.I.N.T Press from March 30 to April 3. Details about the new print will be available soon.

Many students assisted the project, including Jessie Barnes, Annavittoria Conner, D! Internship at P.R.I.N.T Press, Spring 2015

An internship at P.R.I.N.T Press is available to one undergraduate student for spring semester 2015. It requires 8 to 10 hours per week for 3 credit hours. Duties include assisting staff and visiting artists on special projects and events.

It was a busy summer at P.R.I.N.T Press and we have many assistants to thank! From May to July graduate students Luke Ball (MFA 2015), Melody Vaughan (MFA 2016) and Jon Vogt (MFA 2015) helped us print ten editions!

Meanwhile, undergraduate printmaking majors Jaime Durham, Amy Fillipp and Eileen Fritz helped us cut out hundreds of intricate printed shapes and stacks of interleaving, glassine and paper for upcoming publications.

Summer Shop Improvements

UNT Machinist Tracy Lynch at P.R.I.N.T

Thank you to CVAD's Dean and Department of Studio for enabling P.R.I.N.T to repair shop equipment this summer!

UNT Machinist and Tool Maker Tracy Lynch made new stop bars for our American French Tool Press. Stop bars prevent heavy steel beds from sliding out of presses. We are so grateful for Tracy's work as it will make our press safer to operate for many years to come.

Tracy also helped us make alignments to one of our antique iron hand presses. We're so fortunate to have talented and helpful Machinists Tracy Lynch and Kurt Weihe at UNT!

Lastly, we worked with Rotadyne to recast and refurbish four rollers. To all the printmakers out there: bring on the transparent flats and split fountains, we're ready!

P.R.I.N.T Press is closed Thursday, March 27 to Friday, March 28 for the SGCI conference in San Francisco.
